Using Trusty the problem went away when switching from the stock 3.13.0-XX-generic kernel to builds of newer kernels (like 3.14.1-031401). The system did work correctly with older Ubuntu versions (like 12.04) and had this problem show up after upgrading to Trusty (as I already reported in bug #1318837). Philips i386 PC with rt2x00 pci is suffering loss of WiFi connectivity after installing 15.04 Beta.
